Scholarships
The Carl A. Schulz Jr. Endowed Scholarship was created in March 2017 to honor the legacy and memory of Prof. Schulz, who passed away in his sleep on March 19, 2017. Prof. Schulz joined Old Dominion University as Assistant Professor of Mathematics in 1962. Prof. Schulz received a BS degree in Mathematics from Western Michigan University and a MA degree in Mathematics from Florida State University where he studied algebraic topology. He did further graduate work at Wayne State University and at the University of South Carolina. Throughout his career, Prof. Schulz taught 18 different undergraduate mathematics courses and 5 different graduate math courses. He also reviewed several textbooks on Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus and Calculus. Prof. Schulz served as Academic Advisor for math majors from 1964 to 1969 and again from 1972 to 1974. He was a Faculty Senator during the academic year 1974 - 1975 and served as Assistant Chair of the department from 1975 to 1977.
Prof. Schulz was a demanding teacher who expected the best of the students he taught. He was passionate about his students. Many recall Prof. Schulz holding late help sessions for his students. After his retirement in 2009, Prof. Schulz continued to teach a class in Abstract Algebra as well as in non-Euclidean Geometry. His influence over the many students he taught is beyond measure, particularly those who chose their career in the secondary education program.
The Carl A. Schulz Jr. Endowed Scholarship will support qualified undergraduate majors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Schulz family which made the scholarship possible. The Philip R. Wohl scholarship was created to honor the legacy and memory of Dr. Philip R. Wohl who served as the first Graduate Program Director (GPD) in the department. Dr. Wohl received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University in 1971. He held teaching positions at New York University and Carleton University prior to accepting an appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Old Dominion University in 1974. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 1980. During his tenure as GPD from 1979 to 1989, Dr. Wohl recruited excellent students to our graduate program. He also played an active role in developing the applied mathematics curriculum at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. After his untimely passing in 1996, Dr. Wohl's family worked diligently to establish this scholarship in his memory by honoring the best graduate student who excels in both academics and student activities.
