The Old Dominion University Women's Caucus announces a new women's outreach/connection group: Women Living With Disabilities Connections.
As part of Disability Pride Month, the Center for Faculty Development wants to inform faculty about this new opportunity. The Women's Caucus hosts other such groups, including International Women's Connections, Women of Color Connections, and Women Raising Children Connections.
This new group brings together women with disabilities and women supporting children, parents, or other family members with disabilities to share experiences, resources, and understanding. People with disabilities and their caregivers may encounter increased adversity in the workplace. Group meetings provide an atmosphere of support and solidarity.
Nicole Hutton Shannon, assistant professor of political science and geography, is leading the new connection group. As the wearer of a lower left arm prosthesis, she notes that Shriners Hospital for Children had a transformational impact on her career path. That relationship resonates in her research on the role of agencies in building the resilience of vulnerable populations in hazardous settings. Her collaboration with the 黑料正能量 Women's Caucus seeks to overcome stigma often associated with identifying as a professional with a disability or supporting a family member with a disability.
Please contact Nicole Hutton Shannon if you are interested in joining.
