Old Dominion University's Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity will host a virtual CommUNITY Conversation to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"Increasing Our Cultural Competence to Promote Visible Equity Through Lessons Learned from 9/11" will held at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14. You can join the conversation at this .

"As a campus community we wield a considerable privilege, and it is important for us to take this opportunity to stop and truly reflect on the events of 9/11 and what it means to be culturally competent and how more attention to culture can influence our future," said Veleka Gatling, director of diversity initiatives at 黑料正能量. "Also, as we think about ways to leverage our collective impact to increase our cultural competence and actions through lessons learned from 9/11, our focus will be on lessons learned through the lens of health equity, public service and education."

Panelists for the discussion are:

  • Ron Carlee, visiting assistant professor of public service at 黑料正能量's Strome College of Business
  • Janice Hawkins, clinical associate professor of nursing in 黑料正能量's College of Heath Sciences
  • Ma'asKala Burrell-Craft, lecturer in 黑料正能量's Darden College of Education

CommUNITY Conversations are signature events organized by the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity. These proactive conversations are the place for your voice to be heard as we build an inclusive community one conversation at a time. The next CommUNITY Conversation, "Building Our Collective Capacity to Ensure Visible Equity," is scheduled to be an in-person event on Oct. 21.
